Allen City Hall
Allen, Texas
The Allen City Hall is a 65,000 square foot building that provides space for all municipal government functions including work areas, public meetings, and special events.
One of the City’s primary goals was for its new building to be more than just a place to conduct City business. The new City Hall was also intended to be a recognizable civic icon.
The City Hall was designed to be the center piece of Allen’s Civic Center complex. The City Hall, along with the existing Library and the Police & Courts Building, define the boundaries of a new civic plaza. The plaza opens toward Main Street.
The most common natural material seen throughout the City of Allen is limestone. Outcroppings of limestone are seen throughout the City’s parks, creeks beds, and undeveloped areas. The design concept was to relate the new City Hall to its site by allowing the building to rise from an exposed limestone shelf. The base of the building is constructed of 30"x60" limestone “rough-back” blocks of a similar basic color and texture of the site limestone. As the building rises above its base the materials become more refined as they change to a 15"x30" honed (smooth) textured limestone.
