Bethany Lakes Pavilion

Allen, Texas

The design program called for a 600 square foot pavilion to serve a variety of social and educational purposes. The design solution needed to respond to and focus attention on the natural beauty of the site.

Rather than placing the pavilion on the hillside overlooking the lake, the pavilion is placed in edge of the lake and opens toward the water. Continuous masonry walls extend into the water are used to screen the noise of adjacent streets and the visual clutter of nearby residential developments from the pavilion’s users. The focus, from inside the pavilion, is placed on the water, sky, trees, and southerly breezes.

Sliding glass doors allow the pavilion to be either enclosed or open air. The slightly curved, wing shaped roof reinforces the tranquil setting on the lake by appearing to float over the structure.

The Bethany Lakes Pavilion received a design award from the American Institute of Architects.
