Rockwall County Library
Rockwall, Texas
In the late 1980’s, Rockwall County and the City of Rockwall jointly purchased a vacant two story post office building. The intent was for the County to convert the lower level into a new County Library and the City would renovate the upper level for use as a City Hall Annex. Both the interior and exterior of the existing 10,000 square foot building were completely redesigned to provide a proper environment and image for the library.
The building’s hillside location provides for sensational view of Lake Ray Hubbard. The design took advantage of the site by offering panoramic views of the lake. The library’s entry was moved from the post office’s original east side entry to the west side of the building. The loading dock that once served the post office became the reading room for periodicals.
The street on the east side of the building was closed and converted into a public courtyard. The courtyard now provides outdoor space for a variety of library and social functions.
