Plaza Theater Renovation

Garland, Texas

The Plaza Theater was an abandoned Art Deco style movie theater located on a prime corner of the town square. The theater served as the City’s only movie house until it ceased operations in the early 1960's. The building remained vacant after its closing. Since then the building has experienced continuous decay, including the collapse of the roof and the complete destruction of all interior spaces. In the mid 1990's, the City obtained the building. After debating whether to raze the structure or restore it, the City decided to give the theater new life by making it part of the City’s performing arts complex. The building’s exterior was restored to its original appearance and the interior was redesigned as a 375 seat, performance theater. Exterior restoration involved removing the wood siding, stone, and brick veneer, all added in the late 1950's, and replacing them with glass block and porcelain metal panels that matched original materials. Work also included rebuilding the marquee and the building’s neon lighting system. The Plaza Theater is now, once again, a highly visible and popular downtown attraction.
